Mother Theresa said this to people experiencing mistreatment: “People will be unreasonable and self-centered. Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. If you are honest, people may cheat you. Be honest anyway. If you find happiness, people may be jealous. Be happy anyway. The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway. Give others the best you have and it may never be enough. Give your best anyway.” She said, “Do it, for in the end, it is between you and God—never between you and them anyway.” The Apostle Peter had this word from God for us when others misunderstand or falsely accuse us. He asks in 1 Peter 3, “Who will want to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you suffer for doing what is right, God will reward you for it. So don’t worry or be afraid of their threats. Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your Christian hope, always be ready to explain it. But do this in a gentle and respectful way.” Peter said it is better to suffer for doing good than to suffer for doing wrong!
