Research shows that some eyewitnesses have bad memories, and bad memories can send innocent people to prison. One man served 27 years for a crime he did not commit. Still eyewitness accounts are crucial in getting at the truth in a court of law. An eyewitness account helped to confirm the identity of Jesus as God’s Son and our Savior. God appointed John the Baptist to introduce the Messiah to the nation of Israel and to the world. John began his ministry by urging people to prepare for the Messiah’s arrival—by repenting of their sins and submitting to baptism. When he saw Jesus walking toward him he recognized Him as the Messiah. He declared, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (from John 1:29). He said, “I saw the Holy Spirit descending like a dove from heaven and resting upon him. I didn’t know he was the one, but when God sent me to baptize with water, he told me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I saw this happen to Jesus, so I testify that he is the Chosen One of God” (from vv. 32–34). John gave his eyewitness account of Jesus’ identity and many people believed him. Still today, we can testify about Jesus after we meet Him and accept Him as our own Savior. We can tell others that He not only forgave our sins, He has changed our lives, and satisfied our deepest longing for significance.
