Experts tell us DNA can help establish paternity or rule in or out whether one is guilty of certain crimes. That’s because we all have certain unique markers within us. When those markers are present or absent they serve to establish connection. A similar principle is at work in our relationship with God. Certain foolproof activities show whether or not we are in a right relationship with God. The Apostle Paul referred to this when writing to the church at Corinth. Some there challenged his credentials as an apostle. He answered them by pointing to the church as proof of his apostleship. He had ministered among them and some had been converted and placed their faith in Jesus. Though they were not perfect, he said their changed behavior proved his ministry was genuine. He wrote in 2 Corinthians 3. “Your lives are a letter written in our hearts; everyone can read it and recognize our good work among you.” “You are a letter from Christ showing the result of our ministry among you.” Since changed behavior shows God’s Spirit lives in us, if we are not growing and increasingly reflecting the character of Christ, we ought to examine ourselves to see if we are truly connected to God by faith in his Son.
