The late A.W. Tozer said when we sing the beloved hymn, “Draw me nearer, blessed Lord,” we’re not thinking about nearness of place, but the nearness of relationship—because God is nearer than our own soul, closer than our secret thoughts. But God also has a view of us from above. The author of Psalm 33 said, “The Lord looks down from heaven and sees the whole human race. From his throne he observes all who live on the earth. He made their hearts, so he understands everything they do.” These looks of God tell us that God is aware and cares for those who belong to him. Paul speaks of God’s faithful love this way in Romans 8: “I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Love like that deserves our total submission and loyalty.
