In 1909 Laurence Jones graduated from the University of Iowa. When he learned that the illiteracy rate in Rankin, Mississippi was 80%, with only $1.65, a Bible, a couple of textbooks, and faith in God he moved to Mississippi and pioneered The Piney Woods Country Life School. Despite battling, poverty, racism, tornadoes, financial woes, and an attempted lynching, he succeeded in establishing this boarding school, which continues today with an enrolment of 250 students. Generous and faithful donors are keeping the doors open. The Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians chapter 9, explains how generous giving fulfills several purposes—those who lack have their needs met, praise goes up to God, God resupplies the giver so they can give again. He says to Christians, “Your generosity … will prove that you are obedient to the Good News of Christ. And they will pray for you with deep affection because of the overflowing grace God has given to you. Thank God for his gift too wonderful for words!” True followers of Jesus Christ know the benefits of giving toward worthy causes. They know that in generous and wise giving they are expanding God’s Kingdom agenda in the world today.
