In 1921, Dr. George Washington Carver was invited to talk in Congress about the value of peanuts. After waiting all day to speak, the tired staff told him he had 10 minutes. But once he started, he was so full of the subject they listened to him for two hours! Until he spoke, they did not know how brilliant he was. In Jesus’ day, the Jews asked Him for a sign to prove He was the Messiah. In response, Jesus chided their lack of faith. He cited the people of Nineveh, who repented at the preaching of Jonah, yet they refused to repent even though He was greater than Jonah. He cited the Queen of Ethiopia, who came a long distance and listened to Solomon’s wisdom, yet they refused to listen to Him, one greater than Solomon. Jesus then told them that their failure to believe was not their lack of information about His identity or the validity of his miracles and teaching. Their problem was deep within them. Their inner eyes were faulty. Until they were ready to repent of their sins and allow God to open their inner eyes, they would never see truth. The God of creation has entered human history in the person of His Son Jesus Christ. He has paid the sin debt for everyone. When we choose to turn from sin, listen, and accept His message of love and forgiveness, our inner eyes come open. That is because there is no one greater than He is; no one can do what He promises to do.
