Crime is declining in our country, but violence is still a problem. Like many peace-loving people, the Prophet Habakkuk was disturbed at violence in his day. He moaned, “How long, O LORD, must I cry for help? But You do not listen! Violence is everywhere! People around me love to argue and fight. The law has become paralyzed, and there is no justice in the courts.” The LORD replied to him, “I am doing something in your own day, something you wouldn’t believe even if someone told you about it.” God told him he was about to let the Babylonians invade and punish their country for all its wickedness. Habakkuk then said, “But Lord, they are worse than we are. Why would let a nation more wicked than we are punish us? The LORD replied, “When they finish punishing you, I have another nation waiting to punish them.” Habakkuk was amazed at God’s way of dealing with social justice. Even though Habakkuk’s own future looked bleak, His faith gave him confidence. He said, “Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior. The sovereign LORD is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer.” Habakkuk could trust God in the darkest of midnights.
