Research shows that crime is a problem all over the globe. Murder, rape, burglary, assault, kidnapping—these crimes abound not just in the United States, but worldwide. In just one year, 490,000 murders took place. It prompts the question, “Why are we humans so prone to violence?” In Romans 5, the Apostle Paul points to the first man Adam as the culprit. “When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death; so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.” Paul then explains how Jesus Christ now makes a difference for those who choose to accept Him and submit to Him. He says, “Now Adam is a symbol, a representation of Christ, who was set to come. But there is a great difference between Adam’s sin and God’s gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of forgiveness. … Adam’s one sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ’s one act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone.” Today, we might not be able to change crime and violence globally. But we can make a difference where we are. We can be lights to shine God’s love and justice.
