We all know that 70% of our body is water. But consider this: Water filters the air we breathe, cushions the joints in our bodies, transports oxygen and nutrients all over the body. It regulates body temperature; prevents high blood pressure; reduces blood clots; helps kidneys function; reduces constipation; reduces infections, headaches, and fevers. We can go without food for several weeks, but we can live only 3 or 4 days without water. Literal water often symbolizes spiritual water. Jesus used plain water to make an important point about His identity. We read in John chapter 7 that on the last day of the Jewish festival, when Jews prayed that God would send autumn rains, Jesus stood among them and said, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! Anyone who believes in me may come and drink!” Jesus urged people to look beyond literal water and recognize Him as the One who can satisfy their inner thirst. Jesus still extends that invitation to us today. He offers to satisfy the deepest longing of our hearts. He urges us to realize that while food, raiment, and shelter are important, they can never satisfy our deepest spiritual needs. Only He can quench the deepest thirst of the human heart.
