The Wall Street Journal says that while America was once the breadbasket of the world, that role is changing; it’s changing because other countries are increasing their capacity to grow food. Still, it was America that led the way. We showed the world how to increase the production of corn, wheat, and soybeans. Jesus used the miracle of how crops germinate to convey a powerful truth. He said unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it abides alone—a single seed. But if it dies, it produces a harvest of grain. Jesus went on to explain that like a grain of wheat, He was about to die and His death would produce a harvest of grain—born again people who would become members of His church, His body, citizens in His eternal Kingdom. He prayed before dying that His Father would protect those who would become the foundation of the church. We read this in John CH 17, “Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name.” Jesus prays that the purpose for His coming and dying would be fulfilled. He asks His Father to protect His disciples as they spread the Good News of God’s love and His offer to forgive the sins so all who repent and turn to Him.
