One and a half million disabled veterans are proof that U.S. soldiers are courageous. They risk their lives to protect us. Yet our Lord had far more courage than our soldiers. He rode into Jerusalem on a colt, fully aware that in doing so He would provoke the religious leaders to reject Him and crucify Him. But He did it, not only to obey His Father, but also because He loved us. He knew this was the only way to provide for our salvation. Mark 11 describes His courage. At Jesus’ instruction, “two disciples left and found the colt standing in the street, tied outside the front door. As they were untying it, bystanders demanded, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” They said what Jesus had told them to say, and they were permitted to take it. Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their garments over it, and he sat on it. Many in the crowd spread their garments on the road ahead of him, and others spread leafy branches they had cut in the fields. Jesus was in the center of the precession; and the people all around him were shouting, ‘Praise God! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the LORD! Blessings on the coming Kingdom of our ancestor David!” (from Mark 11:4–10). This infuriated the religious leaders and provoked them to call for His death. We will never match Jesus’ courage. But when obedience to Christ seems risky, we can remind ourselves that He will sustain us.
