Civilla Martin wrote the gospel song, “His Eye is on the Sparrow,” back in 1905. She was inspired to write it by observing her friends, the Doolittles. The wife was bedridden for 20 years. The husband could only get about in a wheelchair. Yet they were always cheerful, and when anybody asked them their secret, Mrs. Doolittle would always reply, “His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.” This is the attitude David had even while he was constantly facing ridicule and death threats at the hands of King Saul. Here are his words from Psalm 57: “My heart is confident in you, O God, my heart is confident. No wonder I can sing your praises! Wake up, my heart! Wake up, O lyre and harp! I will wake the dawn with my song. I will thank you, Lord, among all the people. I will sing your praises among the nations. For your unfailing love is as high as the heavens. Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. Be exalted, O God, above the highest heavens. May your glory shine over all the earth.” Let’s face it: Joy in the midst of trouble and difficulty is not always easy. The secret lies in staying focused on the presence, wisdom, and power of God. Most of all, it’s in reminding ourselves that since God takes care of little sparrows, surely He cares for those whom He has redeemed by the sacrifice of His dear Son.
