One day a father and his little son were out in the country horsing around some cliffs. The father heard the boy yell, “Hey Daddy, catch me!” As the father turned toward his son, the boy was jumping off a rock straight at him as he shouted, “Catch me.” The father caught him, but they both fell to the ground. The irritated father asked his son, “Can you give me one good reason why you did that?” The son said, “Sure…because you’re my dad!” The son knew he could trust his father. That was also the attitude David had as Saul was chasing him. David knew God loved him and was trustworthy. Psalm 57 captures David’s scary situation and his confidence in God’s ability to protect him: He says, “Have mercy on me O God, have mercy! I look to you for protection. I will hide beneath the shadow of your wings until the danger passes by. I cry out to God Most High, to God who will fulfill His purpose for me. He will send help from heaven to rescue me, disgracing those who hound me. My God will send forth his unfailing love and faithfulness. May your glory shine over all the earth.” Saul was trying to wipe out David—to preserve the throne for his son Jonathan. Yet David trusted God. He was confident that God would fulfill His promise to make him king over the nation. David’s confidence in God’s faithfulness is a virtue we should all strive to have.
