A wedding ring memorializes the pledge a couple makes—to love and cherish each other as long as they both live. It signifies a promise to be faithful. When God delivered ancient Israel from the Egyptians, He gave them a way to remember that great event. It was called Passover. God’s death angel passed over the firstborn sons of the Israelites. God preserved them from the death angel that killed all the firstborn sons of the Egyptians. To memorialize that event, God told them to kill every firstborn animal, but to dedicate every firstborn son to Him. The Passover celebration reminded them that their deliverance was due, not to anything they did, but to the undeserved grace of God. Centuries later, when Jesus was born to Mary, she and Joseph dedicated Him as her firstborn son. Jesus was Mary’s firstborn, but He was God’s first and only Son. He took on a human body so He could be a suitable sacrifice to atone for our sins. We see in Luke chapter 2 that in dedicating Him, Simeon said Mary’s baby was God’s gift to bring light to all nations. Today, we rejoice that God offers us eternal life when we accept His firstborn Son as our Savior and King.
