A speedboat driver racing at top speed hit a wave that sent his boat spinning into the air. The force ejected him from his seat and into deep water—so deep that he did not know which way was up. He stayed calm and waited for the buoyancy of his life vest to begin pulling him up. Once he knew which way was up, he swam to the surface. Like this man, we may find ourselves confused by decisions we have to make. If we stay calm, we can wait for God’s gentle tug to pull us in the right direction. That tug may be another Christian, Scripture, or the leading of the Holy Spirit. The key is our trust in God to guide us. That is what David did. He wrote in Psalm 27, “Hear me as I pray, O LORD. Be merciful and answer me! My heart has heard you say, ‘Come, and talk with me.’ And my heart responds, ‘LORD, I am coming.’ Teach me how to live, O LORD. Lead me along the right path, for my enemies are waiting for me.” David ends this prayer to God with a word of advice to us: Wait patiently for the LORD. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the LORD.” God often uses waiting to refresh us, to renew us, to shape us into the likeness of Christ, and even to prepare us for his blessings.
Admittedly, waiting for God to act is not always easy, but it is well worth it.
