An old story tells how a young man was trapped in his car on a railroad track. A man sees the train bearing down and quickly rescues the young man. Years later, the same youth was convicted of murder and stood before the judge who saved his life. He says to the judge, “Don’t you remember me? You saved my life on the railroad tracks 10 years ago. Please, sir, have mercy.” The judge replied, “I remember you; but back then, I was your savior; today I am your judge.” Sadly, some people today think that because life is good, they need not worry about the future. God has a message for such people. Amos 4 reads: “Listen to me, you fat cows living in Samaria, the Sovereign Lord has sworn this by his holiness: The time will come when you will be led away with hooks in your noses. Every last one of you will be dragged away like a fish on a hook!” God’s message to this ancient nation was this: Even though things are going well with you today, a day of accountability is coming. In our day, God offers salvation through His Son Jesus who loves us dearly. But one day, Jesus our Savior will be Jesus our Judge. He will reward us for what our deeds deserve. Wise people prepare today for what lies ahead. They prepare by repenting of their sins and accepting God’s offer of salvation through His Son.
