Just as a small child feels more secure near its parent when danger exists, so God’s children feel more secure when they are conscious of God’s presence. Reflecting on God enlarges our perception of Him—especially God’s presence, knowledge, love, wisdom, and power. The more we gaze at God’s sufficiency, the smaller our problems become and the more secure we feel. That was David’s experience. Notice his words in Psalm 63: I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you;  I have seen you in your sanctuary and gazed upon your power and glory. Your unfailing love is better than life itself; how I praise you! .You satisfy me more than the richest feast. I will praise you with songs of joy.” What David experienced in the sanctuary—God’s presence—he also sensed upon his bed at night. His songs in the night reassured him that victory will come in the morning. He learned this from God’s revelation as well as his own experience. Like David, when we practice the presence of God, we discover that God is near and God is sufficient to help us deal with whatever life may bring.
