UN Habitat says every week, 3 million people move to cities. It is estimated that by 2050, 66% of the world’s population will live in cities. Urban planners say the problems of congested living stem from a lack of foresight. And contrary to what many think, God does not oppose urban living. Throughout the Bible, cities are often viewed favorably. Our eternal home is referred to as the city of New Jerusalem. God expressed His approval of urban life when He gave instructions to Jeremiah for the Jewish exiles that would spend 70 years in Babylon. We read this in Jeremiah 29. God said, “Build homes, and plan to stay. Plant gardens, and eat the food they produce. Marry and have children. Then find spouses for them so that you may have many grandchildren. Multiply! Do not dwindle away!” God said, “Work for the peace and prosperity of the city where I sent you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, for its welfare will determine your welfare.” So rather than lambaste all the negatives of city life, we should instead see them as golden opportunities to live and work for Christ and His kingdom.
