When Hurricane Katrina hit the United States in August 2005, the wind and water left about 1,800 people dead, $125 billion in damages and relief efforts, and 1 million people displaced. Some say it was the worst natural disaster ever to hit the United States. Wind and water are powerful, yet hurricanes can only illustrate God’s sovereign power. To give us a glimpse of His supremacy over the earth and the people of the earth, God revealed this to the prophet Isaiah, in chapter 40: “All the nations of the world are but a drop in the bucket. They are nothing more than dust on the scales. He picks up the whole earth as though it were a grain of sand. All the wood in Lebanon’s forests and all Lebanon’s animals would not be enough to make a burnt offering worthy of our God. The nations of the world are worth nothing to him. In his eyes they count for less than nothing—mere emptiness and froth.” God wants us to know that in comparison to His immensity and greatness, we are “less than nothing.” It is why He invites us to always acknowledge Him, worship Him, trust and obey Him. He wants us to know we will find our greatest fulfillment in a vital relationship with Him by faith in His Son Jesus Christ.
