Roderick Hardamon grew up in Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta. Today he manages a $250 billion asset portfolio. But he has another passion. He urges young men to go to college. He connects college students to internships at corporations. He says “It is critical that each of us support the communities we come from.” He’s right. Those whom God enables to rise above their circumstances ought not to forget where they came from. We see this in words God sent to David after he had become king over ancient Israel. In 2 Samuel chapter 7 we read that God told the Prophet Nathan to remind David of how far God had brought him. “Go and say to my servant David, “This is what the LORD of Heaven’s Armies has declared: I took you from tending sheep in the pasture and selected you to be the leader of my people Israel. I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have destroyed all your enemies before your eyes.” God then confirmed to David that one day his descendant would be God’s anointed, the Messiah. We know him as Jesus the Christ. By serving his nation as king, David fulfilled God’s purpose for him. When we identify and fulfill God’s purpose for us, we not only benefit others in our lifetime, we leave a legacy for those who follow us.
