When we say a child is the spitting image of his father or mother, we are trying to say the child bears a striking likeness to the parent. When we say that God created us in His image, we are saying that we have a striking likeness to our Creator. Scholars have debated for many years the meaning of God’s image in us. Most agree that we are not like God in our physical being because the Bible teaches clearly that God is spirit. Nor can we say that we are perfect or infinite in ways that God is. Rather, the Bible reveals that we are like God in our spiritual and intellectual nature. We are self-conscious. We can think, reason, express emotions, make decisions, and carry them out with our free will. When we consider that God chose to make us this way, rather than making us like rabbits, we marvel at God’s love, wisdom, and power. Genesis Chapter 5 tells us that, “When God created human beings, he made them to be like himself. He created them male and female, and he blessed them and called them “human.” So every human is worthy of honor and respect. God created us to manage His physical world. Jesus Christ came to model God’s perfect human. Now God invites all who desire to come by faith in His Son and allow His Spirit to transform us into His Son’s likeness so that we can live forever with Him.
