Eleven herbs and spices go into KFC’s fried chicken. The company diligently protects this recipe; it knows if careless workers dilute the recipe or the public easily duplicates it, KFC could soon be out of business. Protecting business secrets illustrates a biblical principle. God wants us to retain the values He has revealed for our benefit. To Israel of old, God said through Moses, “Listen, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD alone. And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit your selves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Tie them on your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” Paul urged the same principle. In II Timothy 2:2 he wrote, “You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others.” The secret of retaining God’s moral values in our society is to obey them ourselves, and to pass them on to others, including our children and grandchildren.
