Most people experience a certain amount of stress, but medical experts say constant worry can lead to distress, which in turn, can lead to headaches, upset stomach, high blood pressure, or chest pain; it can worsen some diseases. Unrelieved stress can affect the whole body. Research shows that 70 to 90% of all doctor’s visits are for stress-related ailments. Perhaps that is one reason the Bible urges us to seek inner peace. Proverbs 14:30 reads, “A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.” Recall the Apostle Paul’s words to the Philippians, chapter 4:6, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” Remember also what Jesus said, “Don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What shall we eat? What shall we drink? What will we wear? These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries.” So trust in our heavenly Father can lessen our worry. Trust may even save a trip to the doctor.
