From 1974 until 1998, the Willis Tower in Chicago—formerly called the Sears Tower—was the tallest building in the world, 1,454 feet tall. To support 440 million pounds of weight, engineers sank 114 heavy metal beams 65 feet into the earth. These beams let the building rest firmly on hard, solid bedrock. The Willis Tower foundation helps to illustrate a spiritual truth: the depth and stability of God is a solid foundation for His church. While He was here on earth, Jesus told Peter that He—the Lord—would erect His church upon Peter’s confession that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. As God’s Prophet, Priest, and King, Jesus is God’s unique agent to carry out God’s purpose and plan for His church and universe. In chapter 3 of his first letter to the church at Corinth, the Apostle Paul stated, “Because of God’s grace to me, I have laid the foundation like an expert builder. Now others are building on it. But whoever is building on this foundation must be very careful. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have—Jesus Christ.” Based on this vital truth, our message for the world today must be rooted and grounded in the person of Christ—all He is, all He did, all He taught, and all He expects us to do.
