A 16-year-old girl wanted a major road blocked off for her party; she wanted a marching band to precede her as she made her entry on a red carpet. She is just one example of living in the Age of Entitlement. During the Great Depression and World War II, most people learned to live with less. When the war ended, the economic boom allowed us to prosper. Parents decided to give their children things they never had. Sadly, these children grew up to feel entitled to what their parents gave them. Their children now feel even more entitled. One ad now captures their sentiment, ‘We want it all, and we want it now.” This same sentiment existed long ago. Moses led his people out of Egypt. Joshua took over and led them into the Promised Land. When he died, the next generation followed the Lord, having seen the things God had done for the people. But that second generation passed. Judges 27 tells us what then happened. “The Israelites served the LORD throughout the lifetime of Joshua and the leaders who outlived him—those who had seen all the great things the LORD had done for Israel. After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not acknowledge the LORD or remember the mighty things he had done for Israel.” They abandoned the LORD and served the images of Baal. By rejecting God and creating their own values, they hastened their destruction.
