God’s Vision or Television is the title of a helpful book about the influence of the small screen on our values. In the book, UMI’s CEO Carl Wright explores issues such as love, violence, and life after death. He explains the difference between God’s values as found in the Bible, and the messages we often get from TV and the media. Media messages — whether from comedians, talking heads, movies, or music–often devalue moral standards. Perhaps we should expect such messages from those who do not share our Christian worldview. Ecclesiastes 10:13 tells us that views that contradict biblical standards are likely based on foolish assumptions. Jesus said whatever comes out of the mouth comes from the heart. He said, “Out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander.” “These,” He said, “defile you.” Some Christians, fed up with sex and violence in media, have started what they consider a revolution. They are creating a “Film Industry of Faith.” The leaders of this movement say that instead of just complaining about sex and violence, they are going to create films that reflect Christ-centered morals. They have started a Christian Film Makers Festival; they offer a top prize of $101,000 to the best Christ-centered film. Their goal is to promote Christ-centered values.
