Dr. Laura Carstensen is the Director of the Stanford Center on Longevity. She disputes the idea that Senior Citizens have nothing to do after age 65. In fact, she says 40 years of work can hardly support 30 years of retirement. Her vision includes these ideas: We should study and resolve long-term diseases. Design communities so seniors can get around without cars. Build affordable homes with safe sidewalks and benches. She says most seniors are emotionally stable, well-informed, and fairly healthy. They don’t need to pack all their lives into the first 65 years. She proposes that older people serve as tutors and mentors for failing students. She thinks seniors could well be the solution to our failing school system. The author of Psalm 71 knew the value of godly elderly people. Having had so much experience trusting God all through his life, he could testify to God’s sustaining grace during good times and bad. He spoke with confidence, “O Lord, you alone are my hope. You have been with me from birth, from my mother’s womb you have cared for me. No wonder I am always praising you.” Some people today, act as if they can function without God. God lets seniors grow old for good reason. They can testify to the next generation. They can show them that trust in God is the best way to have a well-lived life.
