Even though the peacock has had many symbolic meanings through history, recently it refers to mean a vain self-centered person. When a male peacock courts, he spreads his tail feathers wide to attract a female. So people who strut their stuff are said to be proud as a peacock. But pride can be dangerous. It led to Lucifer’s downfall, and since then, has caused millions of people to fall. Pride is often the reason many people ignore or reject God—they are convinced they can manage without Him. The psalmist did not have that problem. He knew he needed God and said so. He wrote in Psalm 31, “How great is the goodness you have stored up for those who fear you. You lavish [goodness] on those who come to you for protection, blessing them before the watching world.” The psalmist then invites others to discover what he knows: “Love the LORD, all you godly ones! The LORD protects those who are loyal to him, but he harshly punishes the arrogant. So be strong and courageous, all you who put your hope in the LORD.” The psalmist knew that the best way to have a productive life is in a vital relationship with God—a relationship that comes when we accept God’s Son as our Savior, and constantly rely on Him to guide us and empower us.
