John Henry Newman said this about the purpose of life: “Everyone who breathes, high and low, educated and ignorant, young and old, man and woman, has a mission, has a work. We are not sent into this world for nothing. We are not born at random. We are not here to go to bed at night, get up in the morning, toil for our bread, eat and drink, laugh and joke, sin when we have a mind, reform when we are tired of sinning, rear a family, and die. God sees every one of us; He creates every soul . . . for a purpose.” Newman could have gotten his belief about life from Jesus Christ himself. Here is what John 4 says Jesus told his disciples one day. He spoke to them after the woman of Samaria left him to invite her town to come meet Jesus. While she was gone, Jesus said to his disciples, “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work.” Notice: Jesus found perfect fulfillment in pursuing the mission God had for him — even though it led to crucifixion. Like Jesus, we will find our greatest satisfaction in life as we pursue God’s purpose for us, as we use the skills and abilities God gave us to do His will. Do you ever wonder what God’s specific purpose is for you? Jesus said, if a person has a burning desire to do God’s will, God will make it plain to Him.
