W. D. Cornel wrote this long ago: “What a treasure I have in this wonderful peace, buried deep in the heart of my soul, so secure that no power can mine it away while the years of eternity roll.” Then he wrote “Peace! Peace! Wonderful peace coming down from the Father above. Sweep over my spirit forever I pray in fathomless billows of love.” This hymn writer captures some of what Isaiah the Prophet meant when he wrote in Isaiah 26, “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! Trust in the Lord always, for the Lord God is the eternal Rock.” The human heart longs for peace and security. The prophet Isaiah reminds us: The more we focus on God with sincerity and intensity, based on the provision God has made for us in giving us His Son, the more we enjoy peace and a sense of security. The less we focus, the more we are filled with worry and foreboding about the future. To calm our fears, God offers himself as the eternal Rock on whom we can stand emotionally. With God as our eternal Rock our hearts can enjoy peace and security. This can be our experience even as we engage in Christ’s Kingdom agenda of sharing the Good News of the Gospel, coping with problems, conflicts in relationships, and promoting truth and justice in our world.
