President Theodore Roosevelt once said, “To educate a person in mind and not in morals is to educate a menace to society.” Long before Roosevelt, Moses stressed the importance of conveying values to children. In summarizing how ancient Israel would sustain their families and nation, Moses in Deuteronomy 6 said, “Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.” To love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and might indicates our total commitment to God. To love our neighbors as we love ourselves shows that we truly love God. Moses knew that values must be known, loved, and practiced if we are to transmit them to children. We must use the same formula today if we want to transmit Christian values to our generation.
