The Pistol Star is located near the center of our Milky Way. It shines as bright as 10 million suns. Yet no human eye or telescope can see it because thick cosmic dust hides it. Scientists know it’s there because their scientific instruments can detect it. Like this far-off star that only scientific devices can detect, there are spiritual realities that we cannot know without spiritual equipment. The writer of Hebrews explained this when he related how patriarchs saw things that were invisible but very real. Sadly, some people today are deluded into thinking that only what they can see with the naked eye is real. They are like people from Missouri—they refuse to believe unless they see it. Such people will miss a whole lot because God is spirit and we can only know Him by faith. We read that the ancients never saw the fulfillment of God’s promises, but they still believed that God would keep His word. We read that they saw its fulfillment from a distance and welcomed it. They agreed that they were foreigners and nomads here on earth. But they were looking for a better place, a heavenly homeland. That is why God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them. In Hebrews 11:6, the writer also says “without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”
