Many scholars credit John Dewey with spreading the modern idea that truth is relative—that what is truth to one person may not be truth to another. And for that reason, some say there can be no absolute standards of right and wrong. Yet to say with certainty there are no absolutes is a contradiction in itself. But when we bring Jesus Christ into the discussion, He changes the conversation. That’s because He says He came to testify to the truth. He uttered that as He stood before Pontius Pilate. Pilate asked Him to defend Himself, and Jesus replied, “My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world…I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true.” Jesus came into the world to set the record straight—on who God is; on whom we are and our purpose in the world, and how to live in the world; on what lies ahead when this life is over, and how to prepare for it. In the Upper Room before going to the cross to die for our sins, Jesus gave these clear and plain words: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except by me.” He then died and validated His identity as God in the flesh by rising from the dead. He is truth personified.
