One writer noticed how some people blame weather forecasters when weather is not what they want. They forget that weather forecasters don’t make weather; they only try to predict it. God used a series of questions to help Job—and us—realize how limited we are to understand weather and the universe. In Job 38:28, God asks Job, “Does the rain have a father? Who gives birth to the dew? Who is the mother of the ice? Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens? Can you direct the movement of the stars—binding the cluster of the Pleiades or loosening the cords of Orion? Can you direct the sequences of the seasons or guide the Bear with her cubs across the heavens? Do you know the laws of the universe? Can you use them to regulate the earth? Can you shout to the clouds and make it rain? Can you make lightening appear and cause it to strike as you direct? Who gives intuition to the heart and instinct to the mind? Who’s wise enough to count all the clouds? Who can tilt the water jars of heaven when the parched ground is dry and the soil has hardened into clods?” When God ended His questions to Job, He realized that the correct answer to all of them was God Himself. God’s wisdom and power satisfied Job, and should satisfy us, too. Even though we may ask why about weather, we can appreciate and worship the God who makes it and guides it.
