Years ago, a tour bus driver was sound asleep speeding down the highway. He crashed his bus and 15 people died. People in critical roles—like airline pilots, air traffic controllers, train and bus drivers—can lose their jobs or face severe discipline if they fall asleep on their jobs. A National Sleep Foundation survey found that 30% of people they asked admitted napping on the job. Before our Lord left the earth, He gave this solemn warning, found in Luke chapter 21: “Watch out! Don’t let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don’t let that day catch you unaware, like a trap. For that day will come upon everyone living on the earth. Keep alert at all times. And pray that you might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors and stand before the Son of Man.” Elsewhere, Jesus said no one except His Father knows when He will return. That’s why He urged us to get ready and stay ready for His return. How do we get ready? We prepare by accepting Him as our Savior, Lord, and King. We stay ready as we obey His Word and stay connected with Him; as we share with others the Good News of His love and forgiveness; and as we use our God-given abilities to promote His kingdom agenda of justice and love in our world.
