An old myth has it that a frog will jump out of a boiling pot of water and live, but if it is placed in cool water and the heat is slowly increased, it will boil alive. Even though some experts now challenge that myth, it still serves to remind us of this fact: if we gradually adjust to a negative environment, we can be overcome with disastrous outcome. We can become so used to earthly situations that give us sorrow, pain, tears, and death that we conclude that is all life has to offer. Yet the Bible is clear that for believers in Jesus Christ, a new environment is coming. It will happen when God creates a new heaven and a new earth. We read this in Revelation chapter 21: “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” And the certain hope of a better tomorrow can motivate God’s people to tolerate discomforts today—as we live and serve our Lord Jesus Christ. We serve Him faithfully today because we know a better tomorrow is coming.
