An article in Cancer Research says Australian researchers have found a new cancer-fighting drug—one that causes cancer cells to go to sleep or even die. So far, the research is on mice, but experts say this is welcome news, since globally nearly 9 million die each year from some form of cancer. Good news in fighting cancer is exciting. So we can see why people were so thrilled at the Good News Jesus announced as He traveled around Palestine years ago. Back then people had little medical relief for physical pain and were being exploited by the greedy. Jesus came announcing that God was about to intervene on behalf of the hurting. He said God’s Kingdom was near, and to enter it, people had to repent of their sins and accept Him as their Messiah. To demonstrate His compassion, He healed the sick, cast out demons, and fed the hungry. The miracles, indeed, confirmed his identity as the Son of God. But they also showed His compassion for those who hurt—the same reason we, His followers, should help the hurting–to show them God truly loves and cares for them.
