Politicians of all persuasions give optimistic visions of what they promise to do. Yet no political vision compares to the future God promises in the Bible. In Ephesians chapter 1, Paul speaks of God’s plan for his people under the headship of His Son Jesus. He says, “At the right time [God] will bring everything together under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth” (1:10). Based on, and because of, this certain future, the apostle prays that God’s people will have “spiritual wisdom and insight” to grow in their knowledge of God. Paul says, “I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance.” He goes on, “I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him.” He explains how, in rising from the dead, Jesus’ power shows his qualifications to rule over everything everywhere. His power is available today to help us live in ways that please Him. It is why Paul later urges God’s people to love one another and serve one another in order to make a difference in our world.
