When a person invents something with a unique or useful purpose, a patent will protect their creativity. It keeps others from copying the invention. Even while Jesus was on earth, imposters tried to distort or nullify the truth He spoke by their false teaching and tactics. Certainly since then, imposters, claiming to represent Jesus, have led many astray. Jesus prepared us and alerted us to the tactics imposters often use. One way He did so was by setting out a clear statement of His identity and mission. We read this in John chapter 10: “I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me were thieves and robbers. But the true sheep did not listen to them. Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. … The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep.” As the Good Shepherd, only Jesus, the perfect Son of God, was competent to offer a perfect sacrifice that fully atones for our sins. Only He cared enough to volunteer His life to die. Still today, thieves use devious tactics to benefit themselves. Genuine leaders look out for the sheep.
