Muhammad Ali is noted for his braggadocios comments. He once said, “It’s not bragging if you can back it up.” The Apostle John recorded Jesus as saying “I am the Light of the world, the Bread of life, the Water of life, the way, the truth, the Life, the resurrection and the life, the True Vine, and the Door to God’s sheepfold—the place of true fulfillment.” In these symbols, Jesus tells us He is able to satisfy every human need. He used words we already know to explain truth we could never know apart from Him. In John Chapter 10, He stresses His unique role as God’s Shepherd for the sheep. He said, “I am the door or gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures. The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.” While Jesus used language a sheep herding society would easily grasp, the truth applies to people of any generation. Jesus came to give us a rich and satisfying life. No one else can give us what Jesus provides. That’s because no one else can forgive our sins and connect us with God, the source of the satisfying life. When we place our faith in Him, He comes to live within us and changes our innermost being, enabling us to experience fullness of life. Jesus does not need to brag. His resurrection is proof He can do it.
