An engagement ring is a symbol of a man’s proposal to marry a woman. It sends a signal that the woman who accepts the ring is no longer available for courting. Nowadays some engagements extend many years, often without any specific plans to get married. God’s covenant with Abram was like a marriage proposal. We read this in Genesis 17:1 “When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am El-Shaddai—God Almighty. Serve me faithfully and live a blameless life. I will make a covenant with you, by which I will guarantee to give you countless descendants. “God then changed Abram’s name to Abraham–his name carries God’s pledge to deliver on his promise. Today, God offers us an eternal relationship with Him when we accept His Son as our Savior. God’s Spirit living in us is God’s pledge to deliver on his promise. Paul wrote in Ephesians 1:14. “The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify him” We rejoice because we have a promise making and a promise-keeping Heavenly Father.
