According to some sources, the United States ratified more than 300 treaties with Native Americans that have not been kept. Nearly 50% of marriage vows have been broken; and our courts are filled with lawsuits alleging all sorts
of agreement violations. Clearly we humans are not very good at keeping our word. So we are not surprised that ancient Israel failed to keep their obligations under the covenant God established with them at Mount Sinai. Their failure is why God promised through Jeremiah to establish a new covenant. We read this in Jeremiah chapter 31: God says, “I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts…They will not need to teach their neighbors, nor will they need to teach their relatives, saying, ‘You should know the LORD.’ For everyone, from the least to the greatest, will know me already,” says the LORD. And I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins.” Jesus Christ by His death established the New Covenant under which all who accept Him live. Not only do we receive forgiveness of our sins, God’s Spirit comes to live inside of us. He enables us to live as God desires.
