Dr. Charles Drew revolutionized the medical profession when he invented the blood bank. This young African American physician graduated from Columbia University. He was able to separate the parts of blood, freeze the parts, and later reconstitute them for the body. His invention saved 1,000s of lives during World War II; it paved the way for today’s American Red Cross. But as important as this invention is to sustain life, it pales when compared to the power of Jesus Christ’s blood. That’s because when Jesus died on the cross, his shed blood paid the sin debt for all humanity. The Bible says God appointed him to serve as our high priest and in doing so God took an oath for our benefit. We read in Hebrews 7: “The Lord has taken an oath and will not break his vow: ‘You are a priest forever.’” The writer says Jesus qualifies to serve as our High priest before Almighty God “because he is holy and blameless, unstained by sin… and has been given the highest place of honor in heaven.” Knowing Christ lives forever to intercede for us is why we invite people to become His followers. It’s why we urge His followers to model and promote God’s love, justice, and moral righteousness in the world today.
