According to various studies, millions of good-paying U.S. jobs are going unfilled. Even though lack of skills and education are most often cited as reasons some jobs go unfilled, other studies blame location, low wages, and meager benefits. Whatever the reasons, businesses say the lack of good workers hinders their growth and productivity. Interestingly our Lord cited the shortage of workers in fulfilling God’s Kingdom purposes. In Matthew 9, we read: “When [Jesus] saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. He said to his disciples, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.” What was true then is still true today. Masses of people still hurt, still need to know Jesus loves them. While He calls and equips certain people to be special envoys for proclaiming the truth about Him, He calls each of His followers to be His witnesses, to model love, justice, and righteousness—all of which confirm the genuineness of the Good News He calls us to proclaim.
