Weddings nowadays can be expensive—up to $100 million! In Jesus day, He came to the rescue of one young couple when the wine ran out. John, the author of the Gospel of John tells us this: Jesus, His mother, and his disciples were attending a wedding celebration. When the wine ran out, Jesus mother told him, “They have no more wine. “Dear woman, that’s not my problem,” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come. But his mother told the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’ Nearby were six stone water jars, used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each could hold twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” When they filled the jars, he said, “Now dip some out and take it to the master of ceremonies.” So the servants followed his instructions. When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, he called the bridegroom over. “A host always serves the best wine first,” he said. Then when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!” Jesus rescued this young couple from social embarrassment. John tells us this miracle revealed Jesus as God’s Son. It also reminds us that when we obey Him—as the servants did–, He can bring joy into joyless situations.
