Astronomers don’t know the exact number of stars in our universe, but they insist the number exceeds 10 times the number of grains of sand in all the deserts and all the beaches all over the earth. Our Milky Way has 400 billion stars in it, but scientists estimate that at least 170 billion galaxies exist in the whole universe. That’s 1 septillion stars—a 1 followed 24 zeros! That is stupendous, but even more amazing is that God says He can call each star by its pet name. God uses facts about stars and the universe to assure us that since He knows and controls all the stars, He certainly knows our names, our needs, and has the capacity to meet our needs. He revealed this to the prophet Isaiah in Chapter 40:26, but also to the author of Psalm 147: He writes, “God heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds. He counts the stars and calls them all by name. How great is our Lord! His power is absolute! His understanding is beyond comprehension! God is not at all impressed with powerful, prideful people—those who boast about themselves, their achievements, their technologies, and their inventions. He delights in those who honor Him, who submit to Him, and to His Son—the one who is Lord over heaven and earth.
