According to some medical experts, poor posture can cause headaches and back pain. It can also affect our blood pressure and heart rate. The problem is the head. Because it weighs about 20 lbs., when it hangs forward, it strains other muscles and affects the rest of the body. Just as good posture can contribute to good health, so a virtuous lifestyle contributes to a satisfying life. God revealed that truth to Moses in a song. Here is the preamble of that song. It describes many of God’s words and works on behalf of his people. Deuteronomy 32: “Listen, O heavens, and I will speak! Hear, O earth, the words that I say! Let my teaching fall on you like rain; let my speech settle like dew. Let my words fall like rain on tender grass, like gentle showers on young plants. I will proclaim the name of the LORD; how glorious is our God! He is the Rock. His deeds are perfect. Everything he does is just and fair. He is a faithful God who does no wrong; how just and upright he is!” Moses knew that just as rain causes plants to grow, so obeying God’s word causes people to sprout, grow, and be fruitful. That is why he urged them and us to revere and obey God’s word. God gave us the Bible so we can know how to have a relationship with Him and how to function in the world. We cheat ourselves when we neglect God’s love letter to us.
