In 1978, the U.S. Senate adopted a Code of Ethics. It consists of 10 rules that senators follow to foster good and honest behavior. A group of select Senators investigates allegations of wrongdoing and decides if the body should discipline them. The purpose of the ethics code is to foster justice in the way Senators make laws. Long before this code existed, God gave 10 Commands to govern human behavior. Even though these laws were primarily for the ancient nation of Israel coming out of slavery, most Bible scholars agree that they are timeless—a code of ethics that transcends ethnicity and geography. Even though they are constantly broken, they stand as the universal par excellent code of ethics. God Himself wrote them on tablets of stone, so both Israel and generations that followed could know they came from God. At the time God gave them, His presence was so awesome that He overwhelmed the people. They asked Moses to go listen to God and tell them what He said, so they would not die. They knew they needed a mediator with God. Deuteronomy Chapter 5 tells us that God appointed Moses to intercede for them; but now God has provided us a perfect mediator. He is God’s Son, Jesus. Because of His atoning sacrifice, He can intercede for us before our Holy Father. Through Him, we have access to all of God’s goodness, both now and forevermore.
