When parents are expecting a new baby, they prepare for the arrival by gathering certain items: crib, bottles, diapers, diaper bags, car seat — to name just a few. Parents eagerly gather such things in anticipation of their new baby. But how do we prepare for the arrival of Jesus Christ. Ah, the apostle Peter left us some guidelines in 2 Peter 3. He says since we know God will destroy everything around us, we should live holy and godly lives. We should look forward to the day of God and even hurry it along. Peter said the day will come when God will judge this present world even as He preserves His children. We do not know how — nor do we need to know — how God will do all this. But we can look forward to the new heavens and new earth he has promised, a world filled with God’s righteousness. Peter assures us that the old order of sin and unrighteousness will give way to a new world order. He tells us that while we wait for this to happen, we should live peaceful, pure, and blameless lives in God’s sight. We should remember that God’s patience gives people time to repent. Peter says we must not let the actions of immoral people cause us to lose our secure footing. Instead, we must keep growing in grace and in knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. Until Christ does come, we serve Him faithfully by witnessing and working to fulfill His purpose in the world.
