Dr. E.V Hill told how he once made a bad investment in a service station. It went belly-up and he figured his wife would crucify him and say, “I told you so.” Instead, she said, “Honey, we have not lost any more than we would have lost if you smoked or drank.” He said one night he came home and she greeted him with, “Let’s eat by candlelight tonight.” He soon realized that the lights were out because they had no money to pay the bill. She cried, but did not complain. He said, “Who would not love a woman like that?” The Bible tells husbands to love their wives as they love themselves. Here are Paul’s words from Ephesians 5: “Husbands love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word. He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. … Husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man who loves his wife actually shows love for himself. No one hates his own body but feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares for the church. … Each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.” In our society, self-sacrificing love between husbands and wives is often missing, but with God’s help and our desire to follow God’s word, we can help to change our society.
